As I plan my next adventure, I reflect back to why I enjoy traveling the way I do. For me, there’s something refreshing about leaving the car keys behind and setting off on a journey powered by your own two wheels and a bit electricity from the train (older trains will still be diesel). The joys of car-free travel by bicycle and train offer a unique blend of freedom, sustainability, and discovery that’s hard to beat. Whether you’re a seasoned car-free traveler or just someone looking to explore the world at a slower pace, car-free trips open up a whole new way to see the world. It definitely takes a lot more planning, but I find these adventures so rewarding and I am always passionate to help others get started.

Why Car-Free Travel?

To me, choosing to travel without a car is a lifestyle choice that connects you more deeply with your surroundings. When you cycle and take trains, you slow down enough to notice the little things - the coffee shop tucked near an alleyway, random art murals, the architecture-style of buildings, the sound of a nearby river, or even the way the light hits a quiet neighborhood street.

The Joys of Your Car-Free Travel Experience

Although traveling in and of itself isn't very sustainable, you can mitigate a bit of the harm by opting for walking, cycling and taking the train while exploring. But it's more than just forcing yourself to not drive. It’s a mindset that encourages respect for the environment and your desire to live differently and see the world differently. But the desire must be there. Here’s how I have benefited from car-free, slow travel:

  • Support local cafes, bars, restaurants by randomly finding a place cycling or walking I would have never seen on Yelp or Google.

  • If I am cycling in the countryside, I leave no trace. I pack out what I pack in. And for me, I feel good when I leave no trace.

  • I have refillable water bottles and avoid single-use plastics. I even have a travel water bottle that flattens when it's empty, so it takes up less space.

  • I love learning new languages and always learn a few phrases in the local language when I'm traveling abroad.

  • Share my experiences to inspire others to try car-free adventures.

By traveling thoughtfully, you contribute to preserving the places you love and help build a community of like-minded explorers.

Your Next Adventure Awaits

So, are you ready to swap the car for a bike and train ticket? Car-free cycling adventures offer a refreshing way to see the world, stay active, and travel responsibly. Whether it’s a weekend getaway or a longer expedition, the combination of cycling and trains opens up endless possibilities.

Start small, plan well, and embrace the unexpected. Often, the journey itself becomes the best part of your trip. And who knows? You could be the next person sharing a story about a cool café in an alleyway you randomly found.

Happy cycling and exploring!
